Dana 60 ring and pinion gear sets are some of the strongest found in OEM automotive use. Because of its strength, the Dana 60 (sometimes called the Spicer 60) was commonly found in heavy-duty domestic applications. The majority of Dana 60s were used as rear axles, however some 4WD vehicles used them in the front. These front-end applications eventually led the way to high-pinion reverse cut versions of the ring and pinion sets which have become desirable for use in the rear of short wheel base Jeeps. The ring and pinion gears for this axle can be installed on two different carriers. All ratios up to and including 4.10 use the same carrier and all ratios from 4.56 and higher use the same carrier. This used to mean that if your Dana 60 had 4.10 gears and you wanted to upgrade to a ratio such as 4.88, you would also have to buy a new carrier to install the gears onto. In recent years, gear manufacturers addressed this problem by producing "thick cut" gears. This type of thick gear allows you to install a high-ratio ring and pinion (4.56 and up) onto a low-ratio carrier that was originally designed to accept 4.10 and lower ratio gears.
